...“For years I wondered what the education situation was for those disadvantaged families with serious socioeconomic problems. My answer came when I joined Fundación Integra, an institution working with children coming from families living in highly vulnerable conditions. For the last 2 years, I was part of the team working at Granito de Esperanza early childhood education center and nursery with 156 children attending and organised in 4 nurseries and 3 levels. Granito is located in Los Arenales, a shanty town with high levels around vulnerability.
Children relate to each other, learn habits, are fed nutritious meals and looked after. They are happy, healthy children. We have made special efforts to provide them with significant learning, and through Futuro Infantil Hoy project we have managed to engage families in their children’s learning processes. So even though the last 4 years hadn’t been easy, seeing these kids smiling as they thank you is very gratifying” |

During 2002 from a “cave” where criminals planned their activities in a highly vulnerable area, and an answer to people’s requirements, emerged a magnificent infrastructure called Early Childhood Center. The center offered the possibility of providing early childhood education to the many children in the area who were in great need of it. The center looks after 136 children and has a working team of 6 educators, 11 assistants, 2 service attendants. The team has worked hard in getting the trust and respect of the families who not only take their children to the centre but also actively participate of the various pedagogical, social activities which are prepared following technical guidelines of Chilean’s Early Childhood National Assembly, JUNJI
The educational community offers participation opportunities to all families whose children attend the center. Educators and families form a great alliance full of dedication, commitment, solidarity, respect and love for the children’s benefit. When parent Rosa Rivera participated in a FIH public activity she said: ...“ I never thought I would be able to speak in front of so many people and that I was to meet teachers from another country”
Parent, Javier Adriazola says “I knew the centre because I used to take my niece some days. I always thought when I have children I‘ll enrol them in this center, so now I take my daughter and I take part in most of the center activities. |
